West Ashling

A two-storey extension and extensive remodelling of a 19th-century cottage, harmonizing modern updates with the building’s historic character.

This project involved a significant two-storey extension and full remodelling of a 19th-century cottage in the heart of West Ashling. Originally a two-bedroom flint and brick cottage under a slate roof, the property had been extended with flat roofs and tile hanging in the post-war years. The flat roofs and rear dormer were removed, and a new first-floor extension with a slate roof was added to blend seamlessly with the original building. The ground-floor kitchen was relocated from the front of the house to the rear, occupying the former bedroom and opening up to a garden/dining area with folding doors. The first floor now houses four bedrooms and a bathroom, and the existing house was rewired, replumbed, and redecorated throughout.
